Hi, I’m Adele Auchterlonie

Meet Adele,

a Tasmanian-based artist creating expressive, narrative-driven paintings inspired by memory, place and the rhythm of everyday life.

I’ve been painting for as long as I can remember.

Growing up surrounded by ocean, bushland and open skies, I developed a deep connection to the outdoors - a way of seeing shaped by light, movement and space. I spent much of my childhood on the water, sailing from a young age, and that sense of rhythm and freedom still flows through my work today.

For me, painting has never been about capturing something perfectly.
It’s about capturing something felt.

What Inspires Me

My work is inspired by the kinds of moments that often feel small at the time, but stay with you long after.
Long summer days.
Salt on your skin after a swim.
Time spent near the ocean.
Being in the garden.
Shared meals, music playing, conversations that stretch into the evening.
I’m constantly collecting these moments - not literally, but emotionally.
A colour.
A shape.
A feeling.
They resurface later in the studio, reassembled into something new.

You’ll find traces of these in almost every painting - sometimes obvious, sometimes hidden. At its core, my work is about holding onto something fleeting. The kinds of moments you wish you could bottle.
The ones that quietly shape a life .If a painting can bring someone back to a feeling - even for a second -
then it’s done what it was meant to do.
